Looking for Training Ideas? Age-Appropriate TBRI Strategies

A podcast summary by Chayli Duerson

TBRI, Trust Based Relational Intervention, is based on the principles of connecting, correcting, and empowering children and teens who have been impacted by trauma.

Sometimes it can be difficult to know how TBRI translates to teens, especially at camp. To learn more about how TBRI might help you and your volunteers with campers, listen to this two-part series (links below) on the TBRI Podcast as they discuss ways to translate TRBI principles into age-appropriate terms for teens. This is a great tool for training.

In Part I, host Sarah Mercado and guest, Scott Watters, focus on the following:

  1. How the teenage brain interprets the principles of Trust Based Relational Intervention.

  2. How the development of the teenage brain impacts how youth interpret their surroundings.

  3. How to empower teens to make decisions as they grow and develop.

  4. In the second podcast, they continue their discussion by:

  5. Exploring how to avoid drama in discipline with teens.

  6. Summarizing the study, Truth, Lies, and Intimacy: An Attachment Perspective, which outlines some ways secure attachment impacts successful relationships.

  7. Explaining how to employ correcting principles with teens.

I highly recommend listening to both Part I and Part II in Spotify  https://open.spotify.com/episode/0TX4obDapxgarkyBEjPw1A or Apple Music. You can also find other episodes at https://child.tcu.edu/podcast/
